How much can you bench/squat?
I get asked these questions all the time, more particularly from people who really don't know what they are talking about - and they generally ask how much can I bench?? Ummm - hello, but there's more to weights than just benching!! duh!!
anyway lot of people comment that I'm really strong - I don't know if I am - I'm probably average
so my question to you is how much can you squat?
I did 120kg the other night - ok it wasn't all the way down - I was too chicken (and it was the 6th set) - perhaps I could get all the way down if I wasn't so fatigued
BTW I can leg press 200
looking forward to your responses

I've recently gotten back into Olympic weightlifting Vicki with a goal to break a world masters record either this year or next year. Squats I have not done for about a year before I got back into weightlifting. However my best so far after 14 days of training is 130kg x2. Gosh, I can hear you laughing from here Vicki, so stop it right now or else

I get the bench question a lot too. My response is "How much do you think it looks like I can bench?" and I leave it at that.
I reckon I could probably push out 3 plates for a single at the moment but it would be a struggle.

Fadi, my goal next week is to get right down with 120kg (that's pretty much double my bodyweight!)
Rhys, good answer! I'll have to start using something like that myself
Last night I got parallel with 100 (on my 5th set and with relative ease) I pushed out only 5 as the bar was starting to roll off my back not to mention that my groin was hurting bad - had it not, I reckon there was enough fuel in the tank for another 3?
anyway keep me posted Fadi
... and all you other guys/gals, post your results (and I'm talking about serious squats ie quads parallel to the floor - none of this moving the bar an inch or two)

hey fadi I know I said I would go low on the weights this week with my squats, but it's like a drug for me
I did as I said I would
I loaded the bar and did 120kg squats to parallel on my 6th set for 5 reps
I'm impressed even if I do say so myself
(think I've got the guys at my gym running a bit scared)
so I then dropped the weight to 40kg and banged out 2 sets of 20 reps just for you x
ps - and I did the heavy squats barefoot - it sure does make a difference
I think doing them barefoot also commanded me more respect from the guys - they can see I'm serious (I got the comments "oh Arnie style")

My bench has always sucked...but I've always been a squatting and deadlifting machine, lol.
My best squat at a bodyweight of 85kg was 4 plates a side (180kg) for 2 reps. I only did this as a test of strength though, and never actually done this on a regular basis for safety reasons. I'd usually either do 3, or 3 and a half plates a side most workouts.
Right now, at a bodyweight of 71kg lean I squatted 3 plates a side (140kg) for 5 reps, the last time I squatted which was 2 weeks ago. I could've gone another 1-2 reps, but decided to stick to 4 for safety as it was the first time going that heavy in ages. I also do these Ronnie Coleman style, where I don't go all the way up in an attempt to keep tension on my quads, but I do go all the way down. Doing them this way burns like hell and your legs fatigue much faster as opposed to locking out the knees, but I get a better workout this way.
Vicki, you are quite strong for a woman I must say! You'd out-squat half the guys in my gym LOL.

haha reminds me of a great line I heard a few years ago that came up when a powerlifter was harrassing a bodybuilder and the response was "it's not how much you lift it's how much you look like you lift"

Jeez man, you're one strong dude. I retract all my previous offers for a training session together.

lmao! Come on mate, nothing wrong with a bit of healthy competition
hehe. I'm not so strong anymore man. Especially now that I am doing contest prep lol my days of super heavy deadlifting/squatting are long gone, lol. Takes too much out of me. I will throw in a heavy set here and there, but for the most part I keep the reps a little higher now, and weights a little lower. I'm not so concerned with how much I lift these days. In saying that, I was quite happy to be squatting 3 plates again, given that I'm a lot lighter now so it's still roughly double my bodyweight. I doubt I'll be squatting much in a few weeks time though lol maybe you'll be up for a training session then?
Once this comp is over, if I don't qualify for nationals, I will spend the rest of the year and the following year getting as big and as strong as possible, and aim for 4 plates a side for 5 clean reps!

Hey peeps,
Long time no see! Im planning on popping in here more often through the next few weeks.
My bests are
Bench - 145
Squat - 200
Dead - 205
Im pretty proud of my efforts that was after 6 months of powerlifting. What im not proud of is that i could prolly only do about 50kilos less or squat and bench around 100 and dead maybe 170 cos i havent been training pretty much since christmas. But im starting to get back into it now! Leg pressed 380kgs the other week, only second time back to the gym and 380 was my previous best! how does that work? Anways i couldnt walk for almost a week

Those are some impressive lifts mate. Imagine how far you could take it if you started training properly again. Maybe you should look into entering a local powerlifting comp or something?

Hi,
I was defiantly looking at entering a local comp, i went to one last year and it looked like it would be great fun, of course i wouldnt expect to be winning it but it sure did look like fun. I will be getting back into it shortly, again but what i dont like is how heavy I get when i train this way, if anyone is having problems putting on weight do power lifting i guarantee you will never be hungrier!! I lost 10kilos very quickly after i stopped training this way. It sure is a hell of a lot of fun though.
